At Holloways we believe it is vital to support local businesses – and we do so whenever we can. All our food in the Glasshouse Café is locally sourced and some of our suppliers in the Gift Shop are local. Here we shed the spotlight on two of them:
Our chicken comes from Leominster-based Springfield poultry. Rod and Beryl Mee bought Springfield in 1956 and they were joined in 1957 by Rod’s sister, Vivienne, who worked as their assistant. The money to buy Springfield came from Black Puddings and Rod’s father, Stanley, was known as the “Bury Pudding King” during the war years. He sold about 5 tons a day, seven days a week!
Starting initially as dairy farmers, in 1960 Rod and Beryl started the free-range poultry business, processing on- farm and selling direct to butchers. Success soon followed, and in 1975, Springfield Poultry became Organic with the Soil Association.
Today, Rod and Beryl’s sons, Nigel and Stewart, run the business. They sell chickens/ ducks/ portions and even dog-food to anywhere in the country via the internet. Their own refrigerated vans deliver within about a 50 mile radius and all orders over £60 are delivered free. They also do a weekly London run.
The Glasshouse Café uses Springfield poultry in many of its dishes.

Bromyard based Canova was started in 2007 by Mathew Tangye. His flagship early product was the Pocket Garden but that was somewhat seasonal, so realising he needed a ‘winter’ product, he started making Canova candles in 2010. They design and manufacture everything ‘in-house’ so have complete control over the quality of the product.
Fragrance candles are all the rage and the sector has grown rapidly in recent years and Canova are reaping the reward of their development and innovation. Bursting with aromatic fragrances, their candles are a luxurious treat for any home or room. Aesthetically attractive, they instantly make your house smell like heaven and are alternatively invigorating and stimulating, an instant ‘pick me up’, or the ultimate in instant relaxation. Mathew notes that it is noticeable that the more they invest in the fragrance, the more successful the product line is.
Give yourself a treat with a beautiful Canova candle from Holloways Gift Shop – it makes the perfect present!
