Ways with Clove

Rich, warm and inviting, Neptune’s new-season shade, Clove, is redolent of autumnal woodland walks and chilly nights curled up in front of roaring fires.

Hovering between ripe plum and a deep brown, it’s as at home on cabinetry as it is on the walls of a cosy dining or sitting room.

Born from an afternoon walk in the countryside, the Neptune creative team took their cue from the changing colours of fallen leaves collected on a simple wooden tray.

As the days passed and the colours deepened, an autumn collection was born.

Clove is the perfect dark neutral, working effortlessly with almost any colour, from palest snow through to mossy greens, rose pinks and vibrant golds.

Pair it with Neptune’s new fabric collection for looks that are bold or understated, thoroughly modern or pleasingly classic.

Part woodland stroll, part fairytale, Neptune’s fresh Francesca linens, printed with hand-drawn oak leaves, are stunning on sofas, headboards and soft furnishings.

Occasional chairs in Fig Check Harris Tweed, handwoven in the Outer Hebrides, add a touch of baronial splendour to a country scheme.

And Neptune’s Isla velvets, in a palette spanning vibrant Finch to the deep teal of Kingfisher and earthy brown Otter, bring both colour and texture - all the while resisting pressure marks and finger prints.

Victoria Twinberrow, our in-house Neptune designer, shares her design tips for introducing Clove to your favourite spaces.

Ways with Clove

Neutrals

Silver Birch is Neptune’s delicate, pale grey with a touch of creamy warmth - a standard paint colour on the Suffolk furniture collection, which encompasses timeless pieces from extending dining tables to bar stools and sideboards and dressers.

In dining or sitting rooms, pair painted furniture and cabinetry in Silver Birch with the richness of Clove on the walls, its earthy, purple-brown tones creating a cocooning feel.

Add seasonal warmth with Neptune’s Stanton tea bowls, piled high with pine cones and other woodland treasure, for texture and scent.

Introduce freshness with soft furnishings Natural or Warm White Linara linen, or the whimsical oak leaf sketches of Francesca printed linen in Peat.

And pile Kersey lambswool cushions and throws, with their deep, damson hues, on to neutral sofas, arranging Fig pillar candles in fireplaces, for instant autumnal cosiness.

Metallics

While brass and copper work beautifully with Clove, one of her more surprising bedfellows is a vibrant gold.

If you’re introducing Clove to your scheme with a neutral sofa, tactile Florence cushions in Isla velvet Finch will really lift the room.

Clove paired with golds are the perfect alternative to the traditional reds and greens of Christmases gone by.

In a hallway, Clove is naturally welcoming.

Introduce metallics to the classic curves of a darkened oak Blenheim console, with brass Heddon candlesticks and Cranberry Coleridge candles.

And bring the outside in with greenery from the garden and subtle string lighting.

Greens

Rooted in the landscape around us, Clove is a natural partner for greens, from silvery Moss to masculine Olive.

Reminiscent of autumnal walks and wintry retreats, the combination feels calm and reassuring.

Pair Clove with Harris Tweed checks in contemporary country sitting rooms, or create a thoroughly modern look with dramatic clove cabinetry and walls, interspersed with light wood and the subtle slivers of the palest green.

Clove and Old Rose

Pinks

The velvety depth of a Clove scheme is perfectly balanced by the timeless hue of elegant rose.

Introducing Clove to a bedroom will ground the space, keeping it classic and restful without feeling overtly feminine.

It works wonderfully with Emma linen in Old Rose on occasional chairs, cushions or window treatments.

In modern sitting rooms or home offices, a hint of rose added to a predominately Clove scheme will soften and soothe.

Choose natural wood furniture and add Florence cushions in Old Rose Isla velvet or Francesca linen to sofas or chairs.

In a dining room, a flexible, grow-with-you Chawton dresser in Clove is a bold and dramatic choice for smart supper parties and cosy weekend lunches.
