The Fleming is a mirror that requires slow and careful making. First, concentric borders are carved into the circular timber frame (sourced from the Paulownia tree – a beautifully blossomed, fast-growing hardwood that’s most often used for building boats and musical instruments). Then, multiple layers of red, black and gold are painted and dusted across the surface, before being rubbed back to reveal the ridges and produce something that is akin to gold leaf, but much more robust. We think it’s particularly attractive hung near a fireplace, so the light from the flames can dance off its surface.
